The Theatre Arts Major at Kingsborough Community College offers students a varied, liberal arts-based introduction to the art of theatre, through traditional lecture-style classes, conservatory style studio classes and a full production season. Students may concentrate in either Performance or Technical Theatre, both of which allow students to select electives relevant to the student’s specific area of interest. The program produces a season of theatrical productions and workshops each academic year, allowing students to put into practice what has been outlined in the classroom. The program also works closely with the campus Theatre Club and is also actively involved in The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The program holds several articulation agreements with four-year colleges & universities where many Kingsborough students have continued their theatre studies. About A.S. Theatre Arts Program

Mission Statement

Kingsborough Theatre Arts, the theatre program of Kingsborough Community College, strives to use theatre arts as a catalyst through which students will develop the essential skills to become life-long learners. Our program is committed to a liberal arts-based, multidisciplinary approach to theatre arts training that prepares students for matriculation at a four-year institution and/or entry into the theatre profession. Through this work, we seek to develop, train, and inspire the next generation of theatre artists and creative thinkers who will transform our stages and our communities.

Program Overview

The Theatre Arts Major at Kingsborough Community College offers students a varied, liberal arts-based introduction to the art of theatre, through traditional lecture-style classes, conservatory style studio classes and a full production season. The theatre major course of study begins with a core of six courses that provides theatre students with the necessary foundation in theatre studies: Introduction to Theatre, Play Analysis, Acting I, Introduction to Technical Theatre, History of Theatre I and Production Practicum. Following the completion of the core, students may concentrate in either Performance or Technical Theatre, both of which allow students to select electives relevant to the student’s specific area of interest.

In conjunction with the Production Practicum course, the theatre program produces a season of theatrical productions and workshops each academic year, allowing students to put into practice what has been outlined in the classroom. The program offers two mainstage productions each year, usually a play in one semester and a musical in the other semester, each produced in our 299-seat Lighthouse Theater. In addition, laboratory productions are presented in our Acting Studio each semester, which usually feature smaller, more intimate plays and musicals. Lastly, students are also encouraged to join the student run theatre club which offers master classes, workshops, and social activities for any Kingsborough student who is interested in theatre, regardless of major.

The Theatre Arts program is actively involved in The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, which offers additional opportunities for master classes, internships, and expanding the student’s theatrical community. Selected Kingsborough students travel to the regional festival each winter to participate in a week of programming and have previously garnered several honors, awards and scholarships.

The 60-credits earned through Kingsborough’s A.S. in Theatre Arts degree are designed to transfer to all CUNY four-year colleges, SUNY colleges, plus other private colleges and universities, many of which have established articulation agreements with Kingsborough. Recent graduates have gone on to study at Adelphi University, Brooklyn College (B.A. & B.F.A. Programs), City College, Hunter College, Ithaca College, Lehman College, Marymount Manhattan College, New York University, Rhode Island College, The State University of New York, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Western Connecticut State University.
