Message to the Campus

Exciting Updates for the 60th Commencement
April 8, 2024
Dear Campus Community,
As we count down to our 60th Commencement, I am thrilled to share with you our commencement speaker, as well as some ways that you can participate in making this year’s ceremony a memorable event for our graduates and their families, filled with pride, inspiration, and community spirit.
Commencement Speaker
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries will serve as speaker for our 60th Commencement. Leader Jeffries represents New York’s 8th congressional district (in which Kingsborough sits) and is a successful son of Brooklyn, a renowned champion for social and economic justice, and a friend of the College. We are so pleased that he will join us on June 18.
Be a Part of #WaveCapWednesdays
The Kingsborough Wave Cap pays tribute to our iconic wave logo and symbolizes a gesture of “waving” to salute the Class of 2025. It was designed by KCC student Olivia Hercules, an art major graduating in June.
This cap will travel across campus as faculty, staff, and students take photos with it while waving. You can take a picture in your classroom, office, or a favorite spot on campus, creating a wave of support for our graduates as they embark on their journey ahead. Help track the Wave Cap’s journey on social media using the hashtag #WaveCapWednesday.
The 60th Commencement is the Wave Cap’s final destination. I’m kicking off the first “wave” with a video message inviting your participation on the #WaveCapWednesday webpage. Visit to learn about photo and submission guidelines.
Participate in the Kingsborough Tapestry Project
Last month, Dr. Keisha Thompson, chair of the 60th Commencement Committee (second from right), along with Dr. Sarah Dillon, chair of the Art Department (far left), Tommy Mintz, associate professor of art (far right), and visiting artist and presenter Kala Wright (second from left), launched the Kingsborough Tapestry Project. This initiative aims to enhance our sense of community on campus through collage and art-making. Collage is an accessible art form that allows all of us to create something unique together.
Once you create your collage square, like Ms. Wright's square on the left, we will photograph it and include a copy in a large mural-sized tapestry. We will display the tapestry in the Hall of Flags and feature it during the 60th Commencement, making your collage a lasting part of Kingsborough’s history. You will also keep your original collage artwork, which graduating students can use to decorate the top of their graduation caps! Sign up to request the collage cart and start making your collage for the Kingsborough Tapestry Project.
