MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Dear Candidate
We thank you for your interest in our program and welcome your application to our Surgical Technology program. Please bear in mind that applying to the program does not warrant entering it since it is highly competitive, and we have many applicants competing each year.
Application is now accepted all year round. During the evaluation period, you will be contacted by the Surgical Technology Program Director to schedule a virtual interview. After revising all documentation, grades, and other assessments, each candidate will send an email disclosing the results.
Program application submission ends on November 15th for the spring cohort) and May 15th for the fall cohort).
Students must satisfy ALL requirements for existing developmental coursework to be considered for enrollment in the surgical technology program.
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in Kingsborough Community College.
- If the student is applying to the College, their registration must be completed before the application to our Surgical Technology program is submitted.
- Suppose a student is transferring from another school. In that case, the registrar must evaluate their previously completed coursework. Grades need to be available on the Transfer Report on CUNYFirst before the end of the Fall semester to be included in the selection process for the following Spring Semester or before the end of the Spring semester to be included in the selection process for the following Fall Semester.
- Students cannot register and be coded as Surgical Technology students upon initial application to the school. Traditionally, potential Surgical Technology students are initially coded as either liberal arts or biology until the Program Director approves the Change of Status.
- ST990, ENG 12, and BIO 11 are prerequisites for entry into the program. These courses must be completed by the end of the FALL “A” semester in December to be considered for entrance into the SPRING COHORT.
“OR”
- These courses must be completed by the end of the SPRING “A” semester in JUNE to be considered for entrance into the FALL COHORT.
- Students are also recommended to have completed Bio 12 before entering the program or be registered for it at the start of the ST program in the spring semester.
- The student must achieve a grade of “C” in all prerequisite courses required for the program. If a grade is less than “C,” the student must repeat the course before acceptance, and a grade of “B” or better must be achieved the second time.
- Courses from other colleges to be applied toward program requirements must have grades submitted for them. The student is responsible for having their transfer grades visible on their Transfer Credit Report on CUNYFirst.
The timeline for SPRING or FALL semester acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program includes the following steps:
- The first week of DECEMBER until the First Monday in JANUARY is the timeframe in which the program director will interview potential students for the following SPRING cohort start.
OR
The first week of JUNE until the first Monday in JULY is the timeframe in which the program director will interview potential students for the following FALL cohort start.
Students must meet with a counselor or advisor before meeting with the program director to discuss their academic performance and consult with them to make sure that they have already achieved the minimum 2.5 overall GPA and have completed the pre-requisites: ST900, ENG12, and BIO 11, or if you are enrolled in these classes in the Fall “A” (September-December) semester, OR Spring “A” (March-June) semester.
- You can make an appointment by visiting C206B, calling (718) 368-5289, or emailing surgicaltech.kcc@kbcc.cuny.edu or Alysha.Ferguson@kbcc.cuny.edu.
- After having an interview, you will be required to answer a questionnaire. You will also complete a “Change of Status” form with our department. Your Change of Status form, transcript review, and questionnaire responses are considered in your “application process.” Questionnaires are emailed to the potential student and must be returned within 2 days of the initial interview meeting in the same WORD document. Students who do not return the questionnaire will not be considered.
- After final grades have been recorded for the fall semester, the Surgical Technology faculty reviews your application. Despite submission of the change of status form, the registrar will be informed of any change in curriculum status at the end of the prior semester after prospective applicants have completed all entrance requirements and have met the Program Director.
- The Registrar will notify students of the effected change, and the Program Director will send a letter or email of acceptance or denial in February before the start of the SPRING.
OR
The Registrar will notify students of the effective change, and the Program Director will send a letter or email stating acceptance or denial in August, before the start of the fall semester.
- Enrollment in the surgical technology program is limited due to restrictions on clinical site availability. Therefore, completing the minimum pre-requisite courses does not guarantee admission.
- Students enrolled in either ENG 12 or BIO 11 in the winter or summer session will NOT be considered for the next cohort’s selection process. However, we are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
- BIO 12 is a co-requisite for ST3, so if you have not taken this class before applying to the program. If you have not registered for BIO12, you must do so as soon as possible to progress further in the program. However, taking this before entering the semester is strongly recommended. Bio 12 is known for being a challenging course; the difficulty level will increase if taken in the semester along with the ST3 course. Since Bio 12 is a corequisite, you cannot register for fall classes in the Surgical Technology Program if you haven’t taken it or are not registered.
- Bio 51 is a difficult co-requisite for the ST5 course. Taking many challenging courses together in the same semester with higher-level ST courses will deter your ability to complete and progress to the following semester successfully. Bio 51 is otherwise strongly recommended for enrollment for the summer if you are already enrolled in the ST program.
- The CUNY GPA is one of many factors considered for admission to the Surgical Technology Program. In conjunction with the initial interview and questionnaire, a combination of the CUNY GPA and a separate, specific GPA based on STEM classes will be considered.
The goal of this process is to provide evidence that all potential students will successfully complete the Surgical Technology course curriculum. Student success depends on many factors, including, but not limited to, the desire to become a surgical technologist, past and current academic course load, and social and economic (financial aid and work-related) dynamics.
