Meet Your Student Government

Shaquana Young

Student Government Association President

Shaquana Young, Kingsborough Community College's new Student Government Association president, moved to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago in 2023 to pursue higher education. The liberal arts major first set her sights on nursing and then criminal justice before deciding on the liberal arts.

"I was seeking a path that would let me dive into a variety of interests while also embracing my empathetic nature. My initial choices in nursing and criminal justice were focused more on the practical aspects of helping others," Shaquana said. “I worried I’d never find something that would equally satisfy my ever-curious nature, artistic passions, and altruistic qualities; I always wanted whatever I pursued academically to center around these things. Liberal arts offers the perfect blend. It allows me to explore diverse subjects while incorporating my compassion and desire to make a meaningful impact. It’s definitely the best choice for me.”

Transitioning to college life as an international student wasn’t without its challenges. “Every college student encounters tough moments, but it’s especially challenging when you're 18 and the majority of your family is miles away,” she shared. “The transition was tough, especially since it was my first experience being so far from home and my very close-knit family. Growing up, I had never even gone to the mall on my own, so moving to a different country was a significant leap for me.”

Shaquana is the first in her family to attend college. Her original motivation was her desire to become a nurse, which requires a college degree. After learning about Kingsborough’s nursing program, she decided to join her brother, who lives in Brooklyn, and apply to the college.

Despite these hurdles, Shaquana has embraced campus life. She participates in the honors program, is a member of the international student union club, and works as a peer mentor. She also volunteers in the community.

Her involvement in student government stems from a desire to support her fellow students. “Through my exploration of certain courses in liberal arts, like sociology, political science, and English, and my interactions with respective professors, I solidified what I was feeling deep down: my purpose was to use my voice and passion to help others.”

"I aspire to be of great help to those who need it and provide an open environment for students to voice their concerns," Shaquana said of her role as SGA president. “As an international student, I hope to bring another fresh perspective to this increasingly diverse community at Kingsborough, and upon transferring to a four-year university, do the same there. Most of all, as an empath, I want to be thoughtful in every decision I make in office to ensure it helps my fellow students. As Maya Angelou says, ‘The desire to reach for the stars is ambitious. The desire to reach hearts is wise.’”

After graduating from KCC, Shaquana plans to transfer to a four-year institution to major in English. Looking ahead, she sees herself pursuing a career in law or teaching. "In five years, I hope to be embracing personal growth—even more ambitious than I am now—and working on my version of success, preferably in law school," she said.
