KCC Receives Funding To Expand CareerReady Work, Learn & Grow Program
Kingsborough Community College (KCC) has received a $710,000 grant to expand the CareerReady Work, Learn & Grow Program (WLG), administered by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) in partnership with the NYC Department of Education. The funds will be used to provide 4,200 high school students with courses designed to help them make a smooth transition from high school to college and the “real’ world. KCC is the only college participating in the program.
DYCD’s CareerReady Work, Learn & Grow program offers young people from select public schools in New York City an opportunity to strengthen work readiness skills, explore careers, and receive academic support, including guidance on postsecondary education and the potential to earn college credit.
To be eligible, students ages 16-19 years old must attend one of the Career Ready WLG partner high schools and have participated in the 2022 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
At Kingsborough, the students will take a student development course to prepare them for college life, a health course, and an introduction to computer concepts workshop. Once completed, they will have the opportunity to register for Kingsborough’s College Now weekend program, where they can earn three college credits in either criminal justice, culinary arts, psychology or sociology. Under guidance by WLG staff, they will also receive help with their resume, cover letters, and interview skills and be matched for a paid internship in a variety of industries.
Over 2,200 students from 71 NYC high schools successfully completed the WLG program during the fall 2021 semester. Having taken place during the pandemic, all activities were limited to online experiences. This year’s students will have the opportunity to participate in in-person activities, including college visits.

About College Now
College Now is a nationally recognized, no-cost high school-to-college partnership
between Kingsborough Community College, a branch of the City University of New York
(CUNY), and 39 New York City public high schools encompassing almost 7,000 students
annually. Its primary purpose is to prepare students, especially middle-range or moderate
achievers, to successfully manage the educational and emotional changes that occur
during their transformation into college freshmen. The program offers rigorous freshman-level
college credit and developmental coursework without cost to high school sophomores,
juniors and seniors.
