Kingsborough Community College Partners with City Agencies to Launch Free Content Creator Bootcamp
Kingsborough Community College (KCC) is partnering with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment (MOME) and NYC Small Business Services (SBS) to launch the new “Made in NY” Media Academy: Content Creator Bootcamp on Sept. 23.
This free, in-person, seven-week program offered through KCC’s Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education will provide the next generation of creatives with work-ready, foundational skills in storytelling and social media marketing.
Students will complete the course with a professional portfolio, industry connections, and job placement assistance to help them succeed in today’s digital-first economy.
President Suri Duitch recently traveled to Queensborough Community College (QCC) to launch the program at a special event featuring Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, MOME Commissioner Rafael Espinal, SBS Commissioner Kenny Minaya, QCC President Christine Mangino, and special guest Kid Capri, a legendary Brooklyn-born and Bronx-raised DJ and producer.
“Kingsborough is proud to partner with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the Department of Small Business Services to offer a program in Brooklyn that prepares New Yorkers for careers in the creative industries, a sector that supports more than 305,000 jobs in New York City,” President Duitch said.
She added that Brooklyn has long been a borough that New York creatives have called home, from Walt Whitman to Spike Lee.
“The ‘Made in NY’ Media Academy will help us continue that legacy at Kingsborough, where we’ll provide training in digital storytelling and content creation at a time when the cost of living has made pursuing a creative career increasingly difficult for many working- and middle-class New Yorkers,” she said.
Attendees, including students from CUNY schools offering the program, were treated to a music-production master class led by DJ Kid Capri, followed by a Q&A with the artist.
“Talent is widely shared across New York City, but opportunity is not always so,” Deputy Mayor Su said at the event. “And it is through the incredible work of our CUNY campuses, in partnership with City Hall, that we can ensure opportunity is as widely shared as the talent of the people across this great city.”
KCC Continuing Education student Alexander Allen has worked as a celebrity stylist and in Broadway theater and television for the past 30 years. He is part of Kingborough’s first content creator bootcamp cohort and loves what he has learned.
“Because of my background, I’m more steeped behind the scenes as opposed to being in front of the scenes,” he said. “I didn’t need to be a brand, but times have changed. People are making careers out of content creation. I love it because not only am I learning a lot, but I’m also being pulled out of my shell a little bit.”
