Celebrate Earth Day 2026 at Kingsborough Community College (KCC)

Earth Day 2026 at Kingsborough Community College (KCC) is a campus-wide event dedicated to sustainability, environmental awareness, and community action. From engaging discussions to hands-on activities, the KCC community learn, connect, and take meaningful steps toward a greener future.

FEATURED EVENT

3:00 - 4:00 p.m.  Seawall Cleanup Meetup* Location: MAC Rotunda South Entrance (Along the seawall)  KCC President Suri Duitch, the student-led Environmental and Sustainability Club and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy fellows will lead a cleanup of the seawall along the Jamaica Bay side of the campus.  *Seawall Cleanup Meetup participation requires participants to climb down the seawall and onto uneven rocks and ground. You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the event. For your safety, please wear durable, closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that you won’t mind getting soiled during the cleanup.

Seawall Cleanup Meetup*

Location: MAC Rotunda South Entrance (Along the seawall)

President Suri Duitch and the student-led Environmental and Sustainability Club will lead a cleanup of the seawall along Jamaica Bay. 
 

*Seawall Cleanup Meetup participation requires participants to climb down the seawall and onto uneven rocks and ground. You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the event. For your safety, please wear durable, closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that you won’t mind getting soiled during the cleanup.

Earth Day Eco-Shoppe: A special collaborative POP-UP between the Environmental & Sustainability Club & The 3R Initiative* Celebrate Earth Day 2026 with us and support sustainability in our community! ECO-Shoppe

Location: The Cove

A special collaborative pop-up by the Environmental and Sustainability Club and the 3R Initiative. The Environmental and Sustainability Club is hosting a free thrift shop, where you can find gently used clothing and accessories for no cost.

The 3R Initiative will also be in the cove selling student-created upcycled clothing for sale (all items priced between $1-$20. Cash only). Proceeds will donated to the Bottomless Closet, and helping New York City women re-enter the workforce.

Seedling Distribution from KCC’s Urban Farm

Location: The Quad

Visit the SGA and the Environmental and Sustainability Club table in the quad to pick up seedlings from KCC’s Urban Farm.

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 

SGA Celebrates Earth Day Art Project and Seedling Distribution from KCC’s Urban Farm 

Location: The Quad 

Join the SGA and decorate your own pot, then use soil to plant your seedling in honor of Earth Day.  Limited supplies provided on a first come first serve basis.

Celebrate Sustainable Mobility by Taking the Earth Month Pledge with NYS Department of Transportation and get Bicycle Safety Resources with NYC DOT 

Location: Clusters Breezeway 

Take the Earth Month Sustainable Commuting Pledge and sign-up for air quality alerts. We’ll give you the tools and show you how with free transit and bike maps, plus fun giveaways!

11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Maritime Eco-Excursions – Boat Tours Across Jamaica Bay on the CUNY 1 Maritime Vessel!

Location: Sign up at the Library Breezeway Marine Biology Student Exhibit

Times: 11:00 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.; 12:10 – 1:20 p.m.; 1:20 – 2:30 p.m.


Take a 40-minute guided boat ride on Jamaica Bay and discover one of New York City’s most vital coastal ecosystems! Learn about the bay’s rich history, its incredible biodiversity, from marsh grasses to migratory birds, and how ocean chemistry plays a key role in maintaining healthy waters. This experience offers a closer look at the environmental science behind the bay and the efforts helping to protect it for future generations. Space is limited: 30 seats available per trip. YOU MUST SIGN A WAIVER AT THE BREEZEWAY TABLE BEFORE YOU WILL BE ESCORTED TO THE CUNY 1 VESSEL.

3:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Ecology Walk at KCC Beach

Location: KCC Beach

The Kingsborough Beach Ecology Walk will be led by Professor Dmitry Brogun and will provide an opportunity to observe coastal biodiversity, including shoreline organisms and bird species, while exploring how they are distributed across the urban college environment. During the activity, a quadrat (ecology square) will be used as a sampling tool, placed randomly to study sedentary organisms. Toward the end of the beach walk, participants will also help remove abiotic materials, such as plastic and trash, to support the health of the ecosystem.
