Michael Medina

Finance Procurement Specialist

Michael Medina is ready to put his extensive experience to work as a finance procurement specialist in the purchasing department at Kingsborough Community College, a role he began in November 2025.

A graduate of Queens College, he holds a dual bachelor’s degree in political science and urban studies, as well as a master’s degree in urban affairs. Queens College’s motto, “Discimus utserviamus,” or “We learn so that we may serve,” has been a guiding principle for Michael, who has dedicated his career to public service.

Michael has worked for the City of New York for more than 17 years, serving in several key roles across agencies. He began his career as a procurement analyst for the Board of Education. He then spent a decade with the Board of Education Retirement System, where he advanced from an associate benefit examiner to assistant to the executive director, finishing as the member outreach coordinator. After a break to raise his daughter, he became associate director of human service contracts for the Mayor’s Office of Contract Services, leading a team of analysts that supported health and human services agencies.

His career also includes work as deputy chief contract officer for the Department of Corrections and as agency chief contract officer for the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. In these leadership positions, Michael supervised contract staff, managed bid processes, and helped safeguard agency resources. “I learned many lessons in executive leadership that I apply daily,” he said.

Coming to Kingsborough felt like a natural next step for the CUNY graduate. “I have always wanted to work for CUNY. I have had many fond memories of campus life. I also had many opportunities afforded to me because of my CUNY education,” he said.

As he settles into his new role, he looks forward to learning about the college’s ERP system, CUNYBuy, and getting to know the Kingsborough team.

He wants to help faculty and staff see procurement as a partner, not a roadblock. “Some people think procurement is there to say ‘no,’ when we’re actually trying to ensure purchases comply with the policies, procedures, and regulations set forth by the City and State of New York and protect the College from legal, financial, data privacy, security, or compliance risks,” he explained. “We move carefully to prevent headaches. Contracts, licenses, renewals, liabilities, vendors, and data issues can cause major problems later if rushed. When brought in early, procurement can accelerate purchasing.”

Michael describes himself as a “Puerto Rican man, born and raised in Brooklyn, a proud husband, and a father of two beautiful children.”

Outside of work, the self-described foodie enjoys spending time with his family, exploring new restaurants around the city, online gaming, and paintballing with friends. He also values honesty and direct communication. “I am a straightforward person; I do not shy away from difficult conversations. I am big on partnership, respect, and understanding. I enjoy my work and always do my best to ensure my colleagues and associates get the best service when they submit their requests,” he said.

Looking ahead, Michael is eager to collaborate with the Kingsborough community. “My mission is to ensure that KCC receives the goods and services at the highest quality and at the best price,” he said. “I look forward to collaborating with you all to create a space where students are safe to allow their dreams to begin here.”
