Kingsborough Names Former Harvard Dean, Sheila Thimba, as SVP for Finance and Administration
Kingsborough Community College (KCC) announced today the appointment of Sheila Thimba as the College’s senior vice president for finance and administration. She brings to the role nearly three decades of experience in higher education administration and finance. The City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees approved Thimba’s appointment at its Feb. 23 meeting.
Thimba comes to Kingsborough from Harvard University, where she served for 11 years as dean of administration and finance at Harvard College. She has also held senior leadership positions in administration and finance at Rutgers University School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University.
“Sheila brings to Kingsborough a remarkable depth of experience and expertise that will help us expand our financial and administrative capacity at a transformative time for the college,” said Kingsborough Community College President Suri Duitch. “We are excited to welcome her back to New York City and to Brooklyn, where she will play a pivotal role in expanding access to an excellent community college education and improving career and educational outcomes for our students and alumni.”
As senior vice president for finance and administration, Thimba will oversee all the finance and budgeting functions of the College and the Kingsborough Community College Foundation, auxiliaries, human resources, facilities, information technology and public safety. She will also serve on the president’s cabinet, where she’ll play a key role in advancing Kingsborough’s new strategic plan.
In the late 1990s, Thimba served as director of preparatory programs at the 1199 Training and Upgrading Fund. The work led to a partnership with Kingsborough, assisting allied health workers pursue new careers and credentials.

I look forward to working with President Duitch, the cabinet and my team to help the College strengthen its financial position, implement innovative solutions to administrative challenges and support the ambitions of our talented students.”
Born and raised in Kenya, Thimba came to the United States as an international student. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and economics from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey, a master’s degree in political economy at the New School for Social Research in New York City and is an alumna of the Executive Management Program in Leadership Development (PLD) at Harvard Business School.
