 Elementary Italian I

Romance begins with language. Italian 100 is an introductory course to this beautiful Romance language. Here you will enhance your ability to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the arts, music and cuisine that are a part of Italian culture; you will also gain a fundamental understanding of the language of Italy. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to experience this culture on a hands-on basis by participating in the many and varied activities of the Italian Club.

The goal of this course is to give students the basic competence to communicate in Italian and to be able to write and read letters, short stories, magazine articles, menus and maps. The opportunity to achieve this competence is made available to the student through traditional classroom work and is enhanced through laboratory audio and visual material, music and film, all in conjunction with our textbook Ciao, 7th Edition, by Carla Larese Riga & Chiaria Maria Dal Martello. This text is augmented by a CD-ROM, audio CD and on-line exercises.

This course is designed for beginners and carries no pre-requisites. However, if you have studied Italian for more than two years or speak the language at home, you must take the Foreign Language Placement Examination that is administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures. The outcome of this test will reflect your proficiency in Italian and will allow us to place you accurately. Should you need further information, please contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures.
