A.S. Degree in Biotechnology
A 60-Credit two year college degree
Kingsborough Community College’s A.S. Degree in Biotechnology is designed for high school graduates who wish to gain career-oriented training for immediate employment in the biotechnology industry. The 60 credit program can be completed by students in two years, and incorporates a unique two-year, four-year collaboration with Brooklyn College. The A.S. degree is linked to Brooklyn College’s baccalaureate programs in biology to ensure graduates with the most efficient, seamless transfer possible with the greatest potential for continued success. A special feature of Kingsborough’s collaborative program with Brooklyn is that it is front-loaded to offer all courses specific to biotechnology at the community college level. Students will gain most of their specialized knowledge of biotechnology while at Kingsborough and will broaden their knowledge and career options along with a strong background for advanced degrees through study at Brooklyn.
The degree program has a curriculum designed to meet the needs of the biotechnology industry in New York and the tri-state area. Students in the program gain basic knowledge in the sciences and first-hand laboratory skills with the latest theoretical and practical tools used in modern laboratories, including molecular and cellular techniques and the use of computer software to prepare reports and process data. The program’s aim is to provide two-year college graduates with preparation for immediate employment while also helping them plan a long-term career, and, at the same time, providing well-trained workers for emerging New York City industries.
The Brooklyn Biotechnology Bridge
Kingsborough’s A.S. in biotechnology is the only two-year degree in biotechnology within the City University of New York system. The Brooklyn Biotechnology Bridge, a coordinated project to support the development of the dual degree program between Kingsborough and Brooklyn College, was supported by the National Science Foundation from 2008-2012.
