Spring 2024 Student Orientation
Spring 2024 New Student Orientation
Tuesday, February 27, 2024
The halls of Kingsborough were bustling with students attending the in-person Spring 2024 New Student Orientation on Tuesday, February 27, eager to begin their KCC journey. Students like freshman students Ashley and Emmanuel, who chose Kingsborough because of its proximity to their homes in Far Rockaway. “It only takes us 30 minutes to drive here,” said Ashley, a biology major who plans to become a veterinarian.
Future-lawyer Emmanuel is majoring in criminal justice. He felt a sense of community since the first day he stepped on campus. “I really liked that community was emphasized from the beginning of orientation to the end. From the ice-breaking activities to the people I spoke to,” he said. “I feel the community and think this is a culture that’s going to stick with us throughout the years.”
Ashley was impressed with what KCC has to offer. “From clubs and programs to help out financially, find jobs, and support for students with children…it’s really good to have these things available.”
Altogether, 411 engaged students attended the informative line-up of events coordinated by the New Student Engagement/Orientation Committee, which included a pre-welcome program with mistress of ceremonies, VP Johana Rivera, who introduced representatives from the Access Resource Center, Men's Resource Center, Athletics and student team representatives, as well as SGA, who greeted students while they waited for the official program to begin.
President Suri Duitch and VP Sharon Warren Cook welcomed students, followed by a student panel and tabling for student support services and academic programs. Students were encouraged to participate in workshops to guide them on how to claim their KCC email and student ID. They enjoyed a free lunch, swag, raffle prizes and DJ entertainment.
One attendee, Jamoree, feels very confident about his decision to enter the physical therapist program after having an in-depth conversation with the program director during orientation. Jamoree is a legacy student whose father attended Kingsborough many years ago. In addition, his girlfriend is in the nursing program. “The director explained the process of getting into the program and what classes I’ll need,” said Jamoree. “He assured me that he would be there to help me through my whole course toward completing the program. It really helped knowing that I won’t have to wonder what I need to do.”
He enjoyed learning about other programs available at Kingsborough, especially the sleep technology courses, and that you can create your own club. “I knew the college offered a lot but now I know it offers a lot more,” added Jamoree.
Later on, advisors and directors delivered a “Welcome to the College Experience” workshop and volunteers from several offices, including Student Affairs, Advisement, Enrollment Management, and Advancement, joined in guiding students to their various destinations on campus.
An additional 428 students attended a virtual orientation on February 28.
